Engagement Party and Bridal Shower Etiquette

While wedding customs may vary from family to family, we think there are some basic guidelines we highly recommend you and your children become familiar with. In this section, we will cover duties for the mother of the bride and mother of the groom, handling the guest list, paying for the wedding, and hiring outside vendors.

Traditionally, the bride’s parents are allowed the first opportunity to host the engagement party. We don’t see this tradition being strictly followed now, as friends of the couple often host the engagement party and sometimes couples have multiple engagement parties. We recommend you discuss with the couple what they want to do and also think about how much budget you want to allocate to the engagement party if you have been asked to host it.

Typically, the maid of honor hosts the bridal shower. Many etiquette guides don’t approve of a family member hosting the bridal shower as it looks like the family is just soliciting gifts for the bride. Often the mother of the bride and/or the bride’s sister will still be involved, just not technically as the host. Realistically, a relative is sometimes the only appropriate host and that’s okay too.
